In addition to being a generally interesting blog for writers by writers, they post "Write Now" prompts encouraging you to write, and to share some of that writing if you'd like. So I took the suggested five minute minimum and tried to write a complete scene using the prompt and here's what I've come up with.
This is the prompt from February 5, 2013, which was "I think you broke it."
Here's my take on it.
Scene:
“What did you do that for?” Matt asked, stumbling backward
and glaring up at his older brother. He
bumped into the wall with a heavy thud.
“You needed to stop,” Jimmy answered, putting his hands on
Matt’s shoulders. “You’re too old to be
shorting out like that.”
“You didn’t have to hit me quite so hard,” Matt said,
fingers gingerly exploring his cheek.
Jimmy had hauled off and smacked him, and it felt like he hadn’t held
back at all.
“It wasn’t that hard,” Jimmy said, taking his chin in one
hand and turning his face so he could examine Matt’s cheek. “It probably won’t even bruise.
“Maybe,” Matt said, pulling his face away, or trying to anyway.
He stumbled again when Jimmy kept his grip and the one hand
on his shoulder wasn’t enough to keep him from crashing into the end table.
“Well, shit,” Jimmy said as he released Matt completely,
trying to keep from unbalancing him any worse than he already had.
“Fuck,” Matt cursed as he hit the wall again, and slid, one
foot hitting something hard.
“I think you broke it,” Jimmy said thoughtfully, staring at
a spot by Matt’s feet.
“Broke what?” Matt asked, praying it wasn’t anything that
would upset his mother.
“The end table,” Jimmy said.
“Good thing that one’s not an antique huh?”
“Definitely,” Matt answered in relief.
“Come on,” Jimmy said, patting Matt’s shoulder. “Let’s get this mess cleaned up and go buy a
new end table.”
Matt smiled. His
brother could be a complete dick sometimes, but he was always there when Matt
really needed him.
