Blue Fire Drabble

One of the writing communities I participate in has a challenge every month.  The rules for the challenge are to write a 100 word (or shorter) piece that is complete and can stand alone.  The idea is to have either a beginning, middle, and end like any story, or a joke with a punchline, or something along those lines.

This month's challenge was "blue and/or fire."  Meaning you can use blue as your topic/word to include, or fire, or both.

As this community is largely dedicated to fanfiction, I won't be posting all my entries here, since I plan for this blog to be for original work only.  However, this one is both an original character, and incorporates both blue and fire, so I wanted to share it here.

Title: Playing With Fire

Story:

Kim sat waiting for her chemistry teacher to get back and help her with an experiment.   It was three-fifteen.  Forty-five minutes to wait.

She turned on the Bunsen burner and lit it.

The flame burned orange.  She slowly adjusted the air hole and the flame slowly turned blue.

The door was closed.

Kim held her hands on either side of the flame and lifted it off the burner.  She cupped one hand under it, cradling it gently as she turned off the gas.

The flame danced and flickered above her palm for a few seconds before winking out.
